Gladson Awako, a midfielder for Accra Hearts of Oak, has been chosen to captain the Black Galaxies squad when they travel to the CHAN competition in Algeria the next year.

The 31-year-old striker was chosen by the squad’s head coach, Annor Walker, during a team meeting on Sunday after demonstrating his leadership abilities while serving as the Ghanaian team’s interim captain throughout the tournament’s qualification round.

As Ghana looks to win the CHAN competition this time around, the midfielder will be assisted by forwards Daniel Afriyie Barnieh as first vice-captain and David Abagna as second vice-captain.

Before traveling to Algeria for the major event, Black Galaxies would complete their 18-day intensive training in Cairo, Egypt in preparation for the African championship.

Due to the fact that all twenty-five players were well enough to compete, the team departed Accra’s shores on Saturday.

Ghana was placed in Group C along with Madagascar, Sudan, and Morocco for the 2023 CHAN tournament, which would run from January 13 to February 4.

Ghana last competed in the CHAN event in 2014, making it to the finals where they fell to Libya 4-3 on penalties.

The West African giants will compete against 17 other teams for the top prize in the following edition and hope to return stronger.
