Registered nurses in Quebec having the lowest starting salaries in Canada

Maud Guay-Jadah a youth nurse says “It’s very frustrating obviously and it’s very tempting to leave Quebec especially when we speak

English and can easily move from one province to another it’s hard to retain nurses here”

The starting salary for nurses in Quebec with a bachelor’s degree is just under 53,000 dollars a year.

The average in Canada just over 73,000 dollars.

Natalie Stake-Doucet a registered nurse and assistant professor at University of Montreal says addressing the lower salaries will

help in retention which has been an issue in Quebec and also her students are aware of the significant salary gap between what they could be making

by staying here (Quebec) and what they can make when they leave the province .

Speaking to some nurses in the province they say most nurses in Ontario are taking very huge amount and recruiting nurses.

If Quebec is not going to increase their salary, most registered nurses says they will leave the province .

About 90 percent of Quebec registered nurses having lowest starting salary in Canada and some of the salaries in the country regardless of experience doesn’t sit well with members.

Some nurses have been volunteering ever since and others have been fighting ever since but nothing seems to have been done to their salaries
