After the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, three teacher unions have threatened to lay down their tools.
Teachers’ unions have warned of dire consequences if the newly appointed GES boss stays in office until 4 November.

The union has changed since the Ph.D. Eric Nkansah objected to the move on October 19th, arguing that the new CEO of GES was ineligible to fill the post.
In a communiqué read to the press at its annual general meeting on Sunday (30 October), the GNAT described the recent appointment as unfortunate, stating that the person appointed was not an educator.
GNAT Executive Director Thomas Tanko Musah, who read the communiqué, also expressed concern about the contract extension of the GES Deputy Executive Director.
“The position of the director general of Ghana Education Service is the preserve of educationists and has since been occupied by educationists since its creation in the 1970s and remains as such even in military regimes
“Council finds the replacement of Prof Opoku-Amankwa with Dr Eric Nkansah, a banker as unfortunate and untenable,” he said.
The government, however, points out that unions do not have the right to decide who to appoint.

In an interview with Citi News, NAGRAT National President Angel Carbonu said the government must listen to the unions.
He also attacked his PRO at the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Kwarteng, who had criticized the union’s attitude in the past.
Mr Kwarteng recently said the union should focus on teacher welfare rather than government appointments.
