The medium security custodial centre in Kabba, Kogi state, in the southern central of Nigeria was build in 2008 with the capacity of 200.
has been attacked by yet to be identified gunmen and 240 inmates forcefully released, spokesman Francis Enobore said.

According to Aljazeera news, the heavy armed men begun their attack with explosives destroying three side of the perimeter fence of the prison, then overpowered a team of 35 security guides killing two of them in the process, and only 54 inmates were unable to escape according to the interior minister.

Haliru Nababa the Controller General of corrections has took charge of the investigations into the prison break and ordered all inmates to be recapture and bring back to justice.
an appealed to the general public to provide useful intelligence that will lead to recapturing the escapees to security operatives, said Enobore.


A total of 294 inmates were in custody, at the time 224 pre-trial detainees and 70 convicted, the prison service said. The jail was established in 2008 with a capacity of 200 inmates.
Suspects can spend years in pre-trial detention in Nigeria. Human rights groups say prisons are often overcrowded and legal procedures inefficient.
