The attorney for infamous illicit mining tycoon Aisha Huang, Captain Nkrebeah Effah Dartey, has expressed dismay in the presiding judge of an Accra High Court for again denying his client bail.
On September 9, 2022, the criminal trial of Aisha Huang, who is accused of illegal mining and the sale of minerals without a permit, began before the Criminal Court 5 of the Accra High Court.
Before adjourning the trial, the judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, denied the accused’s attorney’s request for bail.
The defendant is a flight risk because she is a foreigner with no social links to Ghana, according to the judge, who was dismissing the motion for the third time.
The trial is anticipated to end quickly given the pace of the proceedings, Justice Marfo remarked.
But Mr. Effah Dartey responded to the judge’s ruling by calling it sad in a public interview.
“Once again, unfortunately, my application for bail was turned down, and I feel very embarrassed. But it’s one of the nuances of the game,” he iterated.
When asked if he meant to repeat his request, the accused’s attorney responded that, given the judge’s demeanor, he did not see the court approving such a request.
“The law gives us the opportunity to repeat applications as often as possible except that looking at the demeanor of the judge it might not be a useful exercise,” he highlighted.
