A staunch member of the governing NPP has also teamed up with calls for Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta should resign over his u-turn to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Former General Secretary of the NPP party, Kwabena Agyapong said, Ken Ofori-Atta’s comments before Ghana going back to IMF has made his stay in the office inappropriate.
“On the basis of what he said two weeks before…which is that we will never go to the IMF and [that] we’re a proud country with the resources…
When you speak like that, you should look yourself in the mirror and say, ‘look I got it wrong, Mr President I thank you for giving me the opportunity and I should stand down'”, he said on The Hard Truth on Joy News TV.
Kwadwo Mpiani, another respected member has made a similar call in the past.
The Chief of Staff during JA Kufour’s tenure urged the Finance Minister to take a personal decision to step down, and not wait to be fired.
Former President John Mahama also said Ken Ofori-Atta is not fit to negotiate bailout terms because of his previous open opposition to the idea.
Despite the numerous calls, Ofori-Atta has said he will not step down as minister. He said he would behave like a father abandoning his children if he stepped down over his previous comments.
Meanwhile, the deadline for the SIM Cards registration ends on July 31, 2022, after it was extended by the Minister of Information, Mrs Urlsa Owusu.
The Sim Card registration began on 1st October 2021 and was originally scheduled to end on 31st March 2022, however, the Ministry of Information extended it to 31st July 2022.
Ursula Owusu, who was speaking at a forum by the National Communications Authority (NCA) in Kumasi, revealed that the ministry of communications will not extend the date for the linking of Ghana cards to SIM cards as many are expecting.
According to her, about twelve million Ghanaians are through with the process.
In her own words, she said:
“Most people access their internet through their mobile devices. We must make sure that they do so safely. We must make it difficult for the criminals who hack our systems and defraud us through multiple online channels to operate, and this SIM registration exercise is one of the steps the government is taking in that regard.
Essentially, this stresses the point that this exercise will enable the establishment of a subscriber database with integrity to keep the consumers safe from scams and fraud.”
“I, therefore, take this opportunity to urge all those who’ve not registered their SIM cards to do so as the deadline of 31st July 2022 will not be extended.”
