Gov’t Increases NITA’s Capabilities To Meet International Standards

The National Information Technology Agency (NITA) is being given a lot of attention in order to increase its capacity so that it can provide the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector with international best practice regulatory services, according to Minister of Communications and Digitalization Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

In light of this, she stated that the goal was for NITA to enable, develop, and ensure a thriving and competitive ICT ecosystem with opportunities for businesses and residents rather than one that was profit-oriented or overbearing in its regulation.

“As the sector grows, it comes with its associated risks and hazards that require proper management to prevent loss of resources for citizens, businesses, and the economy at large.

“It is, therefore, imperative that the government partners with the private sector to ensure that systems are standardized to withstand attacks,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful iterated.

Moreover, the minister revealed on Wednesday during a speech at the NITA ICT Stakeholder’s Forum 2022 in Accra that, “The ministry is mandated to lead and champion the government’s digital agenda through the implementation of digital initiatives to bring services closer to the people. The benefits of these initiatives to the citizens cannot be quantified.”

The forum’s theme, “Regulating ICT Businesses and Practitioners in Ghana: Opportunities and Challenges,” was organized in partnership with the Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana (IIPGH).

Participants discussed the regulatory actions NITA would take and exchanged thoughts on the best ways to control the industry.

She went on to say that the ICT sector needed a robust regulator to make sure that businesses prospered and that customers received value for their money when purchasing ICT industry products, solutions, and services.

Last Wednesday, the minister stated during an address at the NITA ICT Stakeholder’s Forum 2022 in Accra: “The ministry is mandated to lead and champion the government’s digital strategy through the implementation of digital projects to bring services closer to the people.
