President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo‘s tenure as the chairman of the Authority of Heads of States of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) has officially ended.
President Akufo-Addo tenure ended on Sunday, 3rd July, 2022.
He served for two terms, first in 2020 and then he was re-elected in 2021.
The President of Ghana chaired his last meeting at the 61st Ordinary Session of the Authority held in Accra on Sunday.
Nana Akufo-Addo has been replaced by Umaro Sissoco Embalo, President of Guinea-Bissau, he expressed his gratitude to his colleague heads of states for electing him as the new Chair.
President Embalo will serve for one year and it could be renewed after one year.
On September 7, 2020, President Akufo-Addo replaced Niger’s former president, Mahamadou Issoufou as new ECOWAS Chair.
This was renewed in June, 2021 to help complete ongoing institutional reforms geared towards the reduction of the number of statutory appointees of the ECOWAS Commission from 15 to seven and to also streamline operational cost.
