The Coventry star explains the celebration’mix-up’ and begs fans not to see it as ‘offensive’ after the now-deleted post.

Milan van Ewijk, a star for COVENTRY CITY, responded swiftly to the “mix-up” around his “offensive” celebration against Millwall.

At the Coventry Building Society Arena on Sunday, the Sky Blues overcame a deficit to defeat the Lions 2-1.

On Coventry’s Instagram feed, a picture of Van Ewijk was shared after the full-time whistle.

But shortly, it grabbed attention since it seemed to depict him giving a salute with one hand and pointing to a mustache with the other.

As soon as the photo was released, fans leapt into the comments section, hinting at its dark implications.

After Milan van Ewijk moved to quell the controversy with a remark of his own, Coventry deleted the post as a result.

“I got two celebrations mixed. Please don’t see this as offensive,” he stated in his message.

A separate post featuring different celebratory photographs was uploaded in its place. The former Heerenveen ace responded, saying, “Yeah, that’s a better pic.”

According to a Coventry representative who talked with SunSport, “Milan’s celebration was regarding the gaming character ‘Mario’.”

Coventry City players have been playing Mario Kart among themselves, which has sparked friendly competition within the group.

Milan was mimicking Mario’s video game moustache by holding his palm over his lips.

In addition, he raised his arm in a motion commonly used by Haji Wright to celebrate being a striker on his squad during his career.

The picture was removed because the club realized how the picture might be interpreted without context, and Milan promptly made a clarification in his response.

Wright, a scorer for the Sky Blues, mentioned before the game that Van Ewijk was “big on celebrating.”
