M N RidwanA routine patrol took an unexpected turn on Monday when Chief Inspector John Asiedu, the station officer at Yonyoo Police Station, accidentally shot himself in the foot.
According to reports, the incident happened in the village of Jimbale, located in the North East Region, while the officer was dismounting from a motorbike during patrol duty.
Sources say that as Chief Inspector Asiedu attempted to get off the motorbike, his rifle discharged accidentally—twice—striking him in his left leg.
The incident occurred in full view of the Yonyoo National Investigations Bureau (NIB) Officer, who was on the scene and quickly reported the matter to the District Police Commander.
The officer was rushed to the Binde Health Center for emergency medical care but was later transferred to the Baptist Medical Center for more specialized treatment due to the severity of the injury.
While details about the extent of the injury remain limited, police sources say he is currently receiving treatment and in stable condition.
The incident has sparked concern among locals and raised questions about firearm safety procedures among law enforcement officers, especially during field operations.
Though no foul play is suspected, an internal review is expected to be conducted to understand exactly how the weapon discharged and to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Chief Inspector Asiedu is a well-known figure in the Yonyoo area and has served in the Ghana Police Service for years. Many community members have expressed shock but have also wished him a speedy recovery.
More updates are expected as the investigation into the mishap continues.
