Speaker of Ghana Parliament, Alban Bagbin has said that it is his ambition to live longer in order to witness things.

In his closing remarks after the censure vote to dismiss Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta had been lost by the minority because the number of Members of Parliament (MPs) never met the two-thirds vote required, he recalled a story told to him by a senior official.

According to him, it is his wish to live long in order to witness things, although he was not clear on which particular items he was talking about.

On that note, he iterated as follows: “One of Senior statesmen, I actually refer to him as an elder statesman, told me a story that when they were in school, a gentleman used to visit them and whiles walking on the streets he would be repeating one statement and I quote ‘if we don’t die early we will see things’ .

I have been praying to God to allow me not to die early so that I can see things. I am not yet old but I have started seeing things.”

You may remember that the Minority Caucus brought a motion of censure against the Finance Minister, charging him with economic mismanagement, financial irresponsibility, conflict of interest, and egregious economic mismanagement.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, subsequently established an 8-member ad hoc committee to look into the motion moved against the Finance Minister. On November 25, 2022, the committee’s report was delivered to Parliament.

The issue was discussed in the plenary on Thursday, and when it came time to vote, the Majority protested the accusations made against the Finance Minister by walking out of the room.
