M N RidwanGabon has officially announced that its presidential election will take place on April 12, 2025.
This crucial announcement was made by the country’s Energy Minister and government spokesperson, Séraphin Akure-Davin, following a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by transitional President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
The election marks a key moment in Gabon’s ongoing political transition after a dramatic change in power in 2023.
The military, led by the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), seized power after declaring the results of the presidential election that year null and void, citing election fraud in the re-election of President Ali Bongo.
The military dissolved Gabon’s institutions and appointed Nguema as the transitional leader.
Since then, Gabon has moved toward reform, with a new constitution adopted in November 2024.
This new constitution introduces a presidential system, eliminating the role of prime minister and establishing a seven-year presidential term with the possibility of one re-election. The reforms are aimed at bringing political stability to the country after years of uncertainty.
While no official candidates have yet declared their intentions to run, the announcement of the election date gives hope to many that Gabon will move forward toward a more democratic future.
The election will be held in accordance with current regulations, and the country is expected to hold further general elections by August 2025.
As the nation prepares for April’s vote, Gabon’s political landscape remains in flux, and citizens remain hopeful that the election will pave the way for lasting peace and stability.
