M N RidwanBrazil’s football federation has reportedly renewed its pursuit of Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti as the head coach for the 2026 World Cup following a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Argentina in World Cup qualifying.
This result has left Brazil in fourth place, just above the automatic qualification line, as the team looks ahead to the tournament that will be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Ancelotti, 65, has long been considered a top candidate for the role, and in 2023, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) approached him with the goal of making him the first foreign manager in the country’s history.
Although the Italian initially turned down the offer, sources suggest that discussions have resumed as pressure mounts on current coach Dorival Junior.
Despite Brazil’s renewed interest, Real Madrid, where Ancelotti is currently managing, has denied any knowledge of talks between the CBF and the coach.
CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues had previously expressed optimism that Ancelotti would take over after his contract with Madrid expires in 2024, in time for the Copa América in June.
Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário confirmed his involvement in the 2023 negotiations with Ancelotti, noting that the deal fell through after Real Madrid chose to retain him following his Champions League victory.
“If he hadn’t won anything, Real Madrid would have fired him and Ancelotti would have come, but he won the Champions League and stayed for another year,” Ronaldo explained.
Ancelotti’s potential appointment would be a significant boost for Brazil, especially given his extensive managerial experience and the fact that many of his Real Madrid stars also play for the Selecao.
