A shooter killed at least 14 people and wounded 25 others at a university in Prague

In the bloodiest mass shooting that has occurred in the Czech Republic in decades on Thursday.

Chief of Czech Police Martin Vondrášek stated on Thursday night that authorities believed the gunman,

A 24-year-old man, committed self-destruction, though this was not yet confirmed. Due to the severity of his wounds, the gunman,

whom the police claimed to be a Charles University Faculty of Arts student,

has not yet been officially identified, according to the chief. His name has not been released by the police.

Authorities are still looking into the cause of the rampage, which happened at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts building in the heart of the nation’s capital.

The neighborhood, which is just across the Vltava River from Prague Castle, is well-liked by tourists and near to important sites.

The shooter traveled to Prague from his hometown village of Hostouň, the police chief said.

According to authorities, some kids barricaded themselves in classrooms as the fighting started in order to escape the gunshots.

Several people were seen cowering on an outside ledge high up in a structure in a photo that was posted on social media.

According to a schedule on the university’s website, courses were in session on Thursday.

According to CNN, graduate student Jakob Weizman and his professor were in the middle of a lesson when they heard what sounded like gunshots and screaming.

After locking the door, the 25-year-old and his professor started shoving furniture in front of it to form a barrier.

“After I made the barricade and locked the door, I hid under the desk and I was preparing myself for anything that could happen,”

Weizman said. “I did not know if (the shooter) was going to come through the door or from the window.”
