In a shocking incident, a rugby league referee was attacked and left with a broken jaw during a match in Australia.

The incident took place on Sunday, April 30, during a match between the Western Rams and the Dubbo CYMS at Caltex Park in New South Wales.

According to reports, the referee, who has been identified as 50-year-old Greg Ziggy, was assaulted by a player from the Western Rams team after he awarded a penalty to the opposing team.

The player, whose identity has not been revealed, allegedly punched Ziggy in the face, causing him to fall to the ground and suffer a broken jaw.

Ziggy was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, and he is said to be in stable condition. However, the incident has sparked outrage among the rugby league community and led to calls for stronger measures to be taken against violence towards referees.

The New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) has condemned the incident and promised to take action against the player involved.

In a statement, the NSWRL said: “We are extremely disappointed to hear about this incident and our thoughts are with the referee and his family. Violence towards referees is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

The NSWRL also confirmed that the player involved in the attack has been arrested and charged with assault. The player has been suspended from all rugby league activities until the investigation is complete.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of referees in rugby league matches and the need for better protection for officials. In recent years, there have been several incidents of referees being verbally abused, threatened, and physically attacked during matches.

To that effect, the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has expressed its support for Ziggy and other referees, saying that it will work with the NRL Referees Association to ensure their safety. The ARLC has also called on all stakeholders in the rugby league community to show respect and support for referees.

The incident has sparked a debate about the culture of rugby league and the need for a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and abuse towards referees.

It remains to be seen what action will be taken against the player involved in the attack, but the incident has highlighted the urgent need for change in the sport.
