M N RidwanFormer Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has openly accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of exploiting his fame to garner votes during the 2024 general elections.
In a candid Instagram Live session, Gyan voiced his frustration, claiming that the NPP leveraged his popularity to influence voters, a move he says he now regrets.
Gyan, a national football hero, initially aligned himself with the NPP when he was appointed as the chairman of the “Youth and Sports” subcommittee for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign.
However, Gyan’s involvement with the party was brief. Just weeks before the elections, he made the decision to step down from his role, citing a desire to focus on his humanitarian efforts.
Reflecting on the campaign period, Gyan expressed his disappointment, revealing that he felt used by the party.
“They [NPP] used my popularity to get votes from the people,” he lamented during his Instagram session.
His remarks shed light on the uneasy relationship he had with the party, particularly after his resignation.
The NPP’s campaign, with Gyan’s involvement, ultimately ended in defeat.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, lost to John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in a decisive and landslide victory, marking a significant shift in Ghanaian politics.
Gyan’s comments add to the growing list of discontent from public figures who feel they have been misused for political purposes.
His transparency about his experience has sparked conversations about the ethics of political campaigns and the role of celebrities in influencing voter behavior.
As the political fallout continues, Gyan seems determined to move forward with his charitable work, signaling a shift away from politics.
Despite his short-lived association with the NPP, his influence and popularity remain significant in Ghana.
