Nigerian Man and Gambian Wife Sentenced to Life for Smuggling Marijuana into UAE

A Nigerian man, 35, and his Gambian wife, 27, have been sentenced to life in prison and fined Dh500,000 each after attempting to smuggle 4.2 kilograms of marijuana into the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The couple was arrested at Dubai International Airport on January 2, 2024, following a routine customs inspection.

The authorities became suspicious when they noticed unusual weight in the woman’s luggage.

Upon further investigation, customs officers discovered over 4.2 kg of marijuana hidden inside several vehicle filters.

The woman was immediately detained, and investigations revealed that the drugs were intended for her husband.

He was arrested shortly thereafter in the Naif area of Dubai while attempting to collect the package from a cargo service.

During their trial, the couple initially denied knowledge of the drugs, claiming they were unaware of the contents of the luggage.

However, their defense was rejected by the court. Evidence presented during the trial, including forensic reports, digital communications, and testimonies from customs officers, contradicted their claims.

The court also found that the couple had a history of involvement in drug shipments dating back to August and November of the previous year, further implicating them in the operation.

In addition to their life sentences, the couple was ordered to pay a fine of Dh500,000 each. If they fail to pay, they will serve an additional day in prison for every Dh100 of the fine.

The court also mandated the destruction of the confiscated drugs.

This case highlights the UAE’s strict anti-drug laws and the severe consequences of violating them. Authorities continue to enforce stringent penalties for drug-related offenses in the country.
