NANA AKUFO-ADDO ADVISED THAT COUPS SHOULD NOT BE ENTERTAINED

The President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo, who also double as the Chairman of Economic Community of West African States, (ECOWAS). Said the era of coup D’etats and military rulings have brought less advancement to the African continent.

The ECOWAS Chairman, Nana Akufo-Addo said, Africa could progress based on two things, thus, democracy and political stability.

Nana Akufo-Addo said during a meeting at the Jubilee House with officials from the Pan African Youth Union, that coups have not helped anybody.

He said, “We have to insist on good governance and democratic responsibility in our continent. We have seen what the years of coup and military intervention did to our continent in the past.”

“Coups only retard progress. Let’s not entertain them.”

Some economists warned that it may be unsafe for a forceful takeover of government if the economic situation of the country keep worsening.

Not long ago, Prof. Raymond Atuguba, the Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, expressed his fear that if no urgent action is taken to improve economy, Ghana may have coup on it’s hand.

Prof. Atuguba said while delivering a lecture that, “We do not want a coup in this country. Yet I fear that if we do not act quickly, we may have one in our hands very soon.”

At the the moment, there are two separate ongoing trials against persons charged with treason-related crimes.

A part of the public had advised that issues concerning coup d’etats must be considered and dealt with, while others expressed their fears it may be approaching.
