KTI Fire Outbreak: 75 Students Rendered Homeless
A portion of the dormitory at the Koforidua Technical Institute (KTI) in the Eastern Region caught fire on Monday night, leaving 75 students homeless.
All of their possessions, including beds and mattresses worth thousands of Ghana cedis, were entirely destroyed.
Some of the impacted students, who were previously receiving accommodation in a private hostel, are now counting their losses because they must borrow clothes and shoes from their peers in order to dress for class.
The entire dormitory was spared from destruction thanks to the prompt arrival of officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The GNFS claimed that the origin of the fire was unknown and that investigations into the incident had begun. They also stated that they would organize a number of engagements with students on fire safety-related topics.
In order for the school and other stakeholders to be able to take long-term measures to curb the issue, Bernard Forson, the school’s principal, said that the impacted pupils would have to remain at the private dormitory until the end of the term.
He made a public appeal for support in giving the impacted pupils the aid they require.
Moreover, the National Disaster Management Organization’s Zonal Coordinator, Prince Nyarko, reported that his personnel had visited the school to provide safety advice.
Meanwhile, in terms of the pupils’ urgent needs, the local member of parliament, Nana Adjei Boateng, has sent some assistance.
