John Mahama Set to be Sworn in as Ghana’s Sixth President Today

John Dumelo, the actor-turned-politician, is ready to start his journey in Ghana’s 9th Parliament.

The newly elected Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon spoke with TV3 ahead of the Parliament’s inauguration, sharing his excitement and perspective as a first-time parliamentarian.

Dumelo, who made history in the December 2024 elections by securing the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), sees his new role as an opportunity for learning and growth.

In his interview, Dumelo emphasized his openness to the experience, saying, “We are here to learn. We will make mistakes, but we will definitely make a mark in the 9th Parliament.”

His victory in the 2024 elections was a significant achievement. After 24 years of New Patriotic Party (NPP) dominance in the constituency, Dumelo emerged victorious with 40,561 votes, defeating the incumbent Lydia Alhassan, who received 27,377 votes.

This victory is a major milestone in his political career, marking his first term in Parliament.

As a first-time MP, Dumelo is preparing for the challenges that come with the role.

His comments reflect a humble approach as he navigates the responsibilities of representing his constituents.

Dumelo’s plans for the future include advocating for the needs of his community while focusing on personal growth as a lawmaker.

The inauguration of the 9th Parliament, along with the swearing-in of President-elect John Mahama, is set to take place on the same day, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.

Mahama’s return to power follows his victory in the 2024 presidential elections, marking his second term in office after previously serving from 2012 to 2016.

On social media, Dumelo’s candid approach and enthusiasm have captured the attention of many Ghanaians.

His supporters are eager to see how he will perform in Parliament, with many expressing hope that he will make a positive impact. One user praised Dumelo’s determination, saying, “Yes, that’s my man.

They are very serious, I pray to God to help them.” Others, however, expressed mixed opinions, with some commenting that they didn’t expect him to make mistakes in the process of learning.

Despite the varied reactions, Dumelo’s new role represents a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape, as the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat transitions to the NDC for the first time in decades.
