The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has been temporarily placed under the direction of Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Mavis Hawa Koomson.

This comes after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo accepted Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto’s resignation.

On January 10, Dr. Afriyie Akoto, who had worked in the Ministry for six years, submitted his letter of resignation.

According to reports, he gave the President his letter in person.

He reportedly has an interest in running for president of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Through a spokesperson, President Akufo-Addo expressed his “sincere” gratitude to the departing minister on January 12 and wished him well in his future endeavors.

President Akufo-Addo then assigned Madam Hawa Koomson “to operate as caretaker Minister at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture until a permanent successor is made,” according to Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Presidency.

Two ministers have so far resigned from the cabinet amid rumors that they are getting set to run in the next governing party presidential primaries, the other of whom is Alan Kyerematen.
