M N RidwanMathias Pogba, the older brother of French footballer Paul Pogba, has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in a failed extortion attempt against the football star.
The Paris court handed down the sentence on December 19, with two years suspended, meaning Mathias will serve only one year behind bars.
However, he will be allowed to serve his sentence under an electronic bracelet instead of in prison.
The case centers around an attempt to extort €13 million from Paul Pogba in 2022, where Mathias, along with five other defendants, pressured Paul and his associates for money.
The group was convicted of extortion, kidnapping, and involvement in a criminal association.
Among those convicted, Roushdane K., considered the mastermind of the plot, received the harshest sentence—eight years in prison.
Paul Pogba’s brother and the other defendants were accused of attempting to blackmail the footballer over alleged “services rendered,” demanding €13 million as payment.
The ordeal reportedly escalated when Pogba was held at gunpoint by two armed men, who confronted him about the money.
Pogba claims he was coerced into paying €100,000 but denied any further involvement.
Mathias Pogba’s lawyer, Mbeko Tabula, expressed shock over the ruling, labeling it “extremely harsh.”
He insisted that his client was innocent, asserting that Mathias was manipulated and pressured into his actions. He also confirmed plans to appeal the sentence.
The case, which has stunned the French football community, has been marred by betrayal, with Paul accusing childhood friends and even his own brother of the extortion scheme.
The conviction adds to the drama surrounding the Pogba family, further intensifying the public’s interest in the footballer’s personal and professional life.
