Deputy Attorney-General Updates Public on Detention of Akufo-Addo Appointee and Wife

The Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem-Sai, has given an update regarding the detention of former National Signals Bureau Director-General, Kwabena Adu Boahene, and his wife, Madam Angela Adjei-Boateng.

The two were detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on March 20, 2025, upon Boahene’s return to Ghana from London.

Srem-Sai, in a statement, assured the public that Boahene is being treated well in custody. He further clarified that Boahene’s wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, has also been detained and is currently in police custody alongside her husband.

According to the Deputy Attorney-General, both detainees have been granted access to legal representation and are being treated appropriately, ensuring their rights are respected throughout the detention process.

Srem-Sai confirmed that he had personally visited the couple and had been assured that they had the right to consult with legal counsel of their choice.

He emphasized that no one should be presumed guilty before being proven so by a court of competent jurisdiction, highlighting the importance of due process.

The arrest of Boahene occurred at Kotoka International Airport when he arrived on a British Airways flight.

It was reported that Boahene was informed by authorities that he was on a “Stop List” and was wanted for questioning.

His detention comes amidst a series of high-profile investigations under the current administration.

The minority leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has since confirmed Boahene’s arrest and condemned it, calling it another instance of alleged human rights abuses under the current government.

Afenyo-Markin labeled the detention as politically motivated, aligning it with broader criticisms of the Mahama administration’s handling of corruption probes.

In addition to Boahene’s detention, other former appointees of the Akufo-Addo administration have also been questioned or detained in connection with various corruption probes.

These include Osei Assibey Antwi, the former Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSS), and Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Public Procurement Authority Board Chairman, who are both under investigation for alleged misconduct during their respective tenures.

The latest detentions are part of a wider crackdown on corruption by the current administration, which has vowed to investigate alleged wrongdoing in the previous government, including cases of financial mismanagement like the NSS ghost names scandal.

According to reports, a recent investigation revealed that 81,885 ghost names on the NSS payroll were costing taxpayers millions annually, highlighting the scale of the alleged fraud.

As investigations continue, many are watching closely to see if these efforts will lead to more significant accountability within Ghana’s public sector.
