M N RidwanGraham Potter, Chelsea’s manager, enjoyed one of his finest nights in charge of the team as they overcame a first-leg deficit against Borussia Dortmund to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The pressure had been mounting on Potter following a dismal run of results after the club’s huge outlay in the transfer market, but this win could bring a measure of calm to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea fully deserved their victory, though they squandered several big opportunities before Raheem Sterling finally made the breakthrough just before half-time, firing past Dortmund’s goalkeeper, Alexander Meyer.
The goal that settled the tie and overturned Dortmund’s 1-0 advantage from the first leg came in controversial fashion from the penalty spot eight minutes into the second half.
Dortmund was incensed when a VAR review penalized Marius Wolf for handball from Ben Chilwell’s cross, and their sense of injustice was heightened after Kai Havertz struck the post with his spot-kick only for a retake to be ordered.
Havertz made no mistake with the second attempt, and Chelsea was on their way into the last eight. The result was fully deserved, and the London side can now look forward to the draw for the quarter-finals with optimism.
Potter will be delighted with the performance of his players, who showed great character and resilience to come back from a deficit in such an important match. The victory will also ease some of the pressure on his position at the club, and he will hope that his team can now build on this result and finish the season strongly.
Chelsea will face some tough opposition in the quarter-finals, with the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City all potential opponents.
However, with the quality of their squad and the confidence gained from this victory, they will be a formidable opponent for anyone in the competition.
