M N RidwanIn a heated exchange over ongoing special voting, John Dumelo, the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ayawaso West Wugon, has accused his opponent, Lydia Alhassan, of attempting to bribe voters at a polling station.
Dumelo claimed that Alhassan, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency, was distributing items to security personnel and media workers at the Legon Police Station polling station, ahead of their turn to vote.
This, Dumelo alleges, is an attempt to sway their votes before they cast their ballots.
Speaking to Citi News, an irate Dumelo expressed his frustration, warning that if Alhassan does not cease this alleged act, he will be forced to take similar measures.
“Lydia is sharing things to people who have not voted yet. She’s giving things to those in line, and this is wrong. What kind of stupidity is this?
If this is how she wants to play, I’ll give her a showdown today… today!” Dumelo said, making it clear he will not tolerate any form of electoral malpractice.
The NDC candidate’s remarks highlight the tension surrounding the special voting process, where security forces, media, and other officials cast their ballots ahead of the general election.
Dumelo’s accusations have added fuel to the ongoing political rivalry, casting a shadow over what is meant to be a fair and transparent voting exercise.
While Dumelo’s allegations are serious, there has been no official statement from Lydia Alhassan or her camp in response to the claims. The Electoral Commission has also yet to comment on the situation.
Dumelo’s frustration stems from his belief that the special voting system should be conducted with integrity and free from undue influence. As the election approaches, both candidates are expected to intensify their campaigns, with voters closely watching every move made by their representatives.
This latest accusation will undoubtedly keep the heat on both candidates, who are vying for the seat in what is expected to be a closely contested race.
With tensions running high, the coming days may bring more revelations as both sides fight to secure a victory in the Ayawaso West Wugon constituency.
