Mr. Gabriel Adovoe Kwabla Kwamigah, widely known as Tanko Kwamigah, an aspirant for the Volta Regional Council of State, has been named in an ongoing investigation involving gold smuggling, money laundering, and fraudulent gold transactions.
The allegations against Kwamigah are serious, including claims that he, along with two other individuals, has been involved in purchasing and smuggling gold and other precious minerals without a license.
The investigation, which has captured national attention, is based on intelligence gathered by the National Security Secretariat.
Court documents, intercepted by TNP NEWS, reveal that the suspects have been obtaining gold and precious minerals from illegal sources and exporting them out of Ghana.
These actions are allegedly part of a broader scheme involving tax evasion and other fraudulent activities related to the gold trade.
In the court affidavit, the National Security officials have requested permission to search the premises associated with the suspects in order to gather evidence and expedite the investigation.
“It is in the interest of justice and national security that the court grants this application,” reads the document, stressing the urgency of the matter.
The revelations have led some residents of the Volta Region to call for Kwamigah’s immediate disqualification from the race for the Volta Regional Council of State.
These critics argue that individuals who are part of the Council of State, a body that advises the President on national matters, must uphold the highest standards of integrity and be free from any involvement in criminal activities.
The Council of State is enshrined in Article 89(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates its role in counseling the President in the performance of his duties.
The elections for the Council of State will take place on February 11, 2025, in all regional capitals.
Kwamigah, as one of the regional candidates, faces increasing pressure to address the serious allegations, with many questioning whether his candidacy can remain valid in light of the ongoing investigation.
