Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was addressing the nation on Thursday night when he revealed this.
“A mass burial site was found in Izium, Kharkiv region. The necessary procedural actions have already begun there. There should be more information — clear, verified information — tomorrow.”
“We want the world to know what is really happening and what the Russian occupation has led to,” the Ukrainian president continued. “Bucha, Mariupol, now, unfortunately, Izium… Russia leaves death everywhere. And it must be held accountable for that.”
After a Ukrainian counteroffensive which prompted thousands of Russian troops to flee, Moscow’s forces withdrew from Izium and other parts of the Kharkiv region last week.
Serhiy Bolvinov, the chief police investigator speaking to Sky News disclosed that a forensic investigation would be carried out on every single dead body found in the mass grave.
Bolvinov said.
“I can say it is one of the largest burial sites in a big town in liberated (areas)… 440 bodies were buried in one place.”
“Some died because of artillery fire … some died because of air strikes.”
Zelenskyy made a rare trip out of Kyiv to watch the raising of the national flag at Izium’s city hall earlier on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Ukraine officials have confirmed that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was involved in a car accident in Kyiv, but he was not hurt.
“The president was examined by a doctor, and no serious injuries were found,” Zelenskyy’s spokesperson Serhii Nykyforov said in a Facebook post.
Nykyforov said medics at the scene of a crash between vehicles carrying President Volodymyr Zelenskyy administered first aid to the driver of the other vehicle after he was injured.”
He did not clarify exactly when the traffic accident occurred.
