M N RidwanA tragic and v!olent attack on the Nanik community in the Bunkprugu/Nakpanduri district has left three people de@d, their bodies burned beyond recognition.
The horrific incident occurred on the morning of Friday, February 28, 2025, when members of a rival faction from Bimbagu stormed the village in an act of retaliation related to a longstanding dispute over the elevation of the local chief.
Among the victims was 27-year-old teacher Nashiru Maijida, originally from Walewale in the West Mamprusi Municipality. Maijida, who had been posted to Nanik two years ago, was one of the three people killed in the attack.
Community members found their charred bodies after the assailants set fire to several houses in the area, burning nearly 50 homes and destroying numerous properties.
The bodies of the victims have been recovered and taken to Binde Hospital for autopsy, as authorities investigate the brutal attack.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Nanik and Bimbagu communities, both of which have been in a heated conflict over a controversial decision by traditional authorities.
At the center of the dispute is the promotion of Nanik’s chief, Nanik Daana, to the position of paramount chief.
The chiefs and residents of Bimbagu have strongly opposed this decision, fearing that it would undermine their influence and authority.
The Bimbagu people have repeatedly appealed to the National Security and the National House of Chiefs to intervene and halt the elevation of Nanik Daana.
In an attempt to deter further tensions, Bimbagu’s chief and his supporters warned Nanik Daana not to step foot in Bimbagu if he is indeed elevated to paramountcy.
The violence that unfolded on Friday is believed to be a direct consequence of these mounting tensions.
Local authorities have not yet identified any suspects in the attack, but the situation remains tense as both communities grapple with the aftermath.
The tragic deaths and widespread destruction have brought attention to the dangers of unresolved traditional disputes, raising questions about the role of security forces in maintaining peace.
As investigations continue, both communities are left to reflect on the consequences of these longstanding conflicts, while the families of the victims mourn the senseless loss of life.
