M N RidwanA fresh wave of volence has rocked Salaga Senior High School in the East Gonja Municipality, Savannah Region, leaving one student hospitalized and several others fleeing the campus.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, February 6, has sparked growing concern about student safety in the area.
The trouble began when a group of students at Salaga SHS marched to the headmaster’s office, demanding the release of three students arrested earlier in connection with a violent altercation between two rival student groups.
The arrested students had been detained after a clash on February 1, which left one person seriously injured.
The protesting students argued that the arrest was unfair and one-sided, demanding that members of the opposing group be detained as well.
When the headmaster refused to meet their demands, tensions escalated. Students began throwing stones in protest, and the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
Youth from Kpembe, a nearby suburb of Salaga, joined the fray, storming the school and attacking the students.
One student was left unconscious and was rushed to the hospital, while several others, mostly boys from Salaga Township, fled the school grounds.
Their whereabouts remain unknown as of the latest reports.
Despite the violence, police have yet to make any arrests related to the fresh attack. However, law enforcement officers have been dispatched to Salaga SHS to maintain order and ensure the safety of students and staff.
The police response follows the arrests of 20 students on Tuesday, February 4, in connection with the earlier clash.
Seventeen of the detained students have been granted bail and are required to report to the police periodically. Three others are expected to be processed for court.
In addition, authorities recovered a locally manufactured gun during their investigations.
The violent clash between the two groups of students originally stemmed from a disagreement during an entertainment event on February 1.
What started as a personal dispute between two day students escalated into a larger conflict, fueled by tensions between Salaga and Kpembe locals.
In response to the violence, a seven-member committee has been set up to investigate the incident.
Their findings are expected to shed light on the cause of the clash and offer recommendations to prevent future outbreaks of violence.
