The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, popularly known as King Zuba, has issued a bold warning to cattle owners: any stray cattle found within the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will be arrested, slaughtered, and their meat sent to feed inmates at the Kumasi Central Prisons.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, April 15, the Mayor said the directive is part of efforts to restore order, discipline, and cleanliness in the city, especially in key areas such as the airport stretch to Manhyia.
“If you’re a cattle owner and your cattle strays into KMA’s area, be rest assured that from May 1, those cattle will be killed and given to the central prisons for feeding,” he stated firmly.
The Mayor emphasized that Kumasi, a key cultural and commercial hub, must be kept clean and attractive—especially for visitors arriving through the airport.
“I cannot sit here and let visitors arrive at our beautiful airport and, on their way to Manhyia, all they see is cow dung,” he lamented. “This is unacceptable. We must clean up our city.”
King Zuba made it clear that cattle owners must take full responsibility for their animals. If they fail to do so, they risk losing them.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions from the public. While some residents have praised the mayor for taking a tough stance to clean the city, others are urging for a more humane or regulated approach, especially for herders whose livelihoods depend on the animals.
Still, the mayor insists he is serious. “Help me get our city disciplined,” he pleaded.
The new enforcement policy is expected to kick in on May 1, 2025. Until then, the KMA is urging all livestock owners to keep their animals off city roads and public spaces.
