Rupa Huq: British MP Suspended For Calling UK Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng ‘Superficially’ Black

The woes of a British Member of Parliament (MP) Rupa Huq from the Labour Party are deepening by the day.

She allegedly made racial comments against Kwasi Kwarteng, the UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer (Finance Minister).

A British-born Ghanaian politician was described as “superficially black” in an audio recording that the Guido Fawkes website posted online Wednesday by the Guido Fawkes website.

“Superficially he is a black man. He went to Eton, I think, he went to a very expensive prep school, all the way through, the top schools in the country. If you hear him on the Today programme, you wouldn’t know he is black,” Rupa Huq is quoted to have said.

Report filed by Sky News indicates that the embattled MP made the remarks about the UK’s first black chancellor at a Labour conference fringe event on Monday entitled “What’s Next for Labour’s Agenda on Race?”

Rupa Huq faced widespread criticism over his racial comments, which have led to calls from several leading politicians in the UK and beyond for a tough stance against him.

In a swift reaction, the Labour Party condemned the comments and called on the MP to apologise.

Rupa Huq was subsequently administratively suspended by the party pending an investigation into what she described as her “ill-judged” comments.

In a post on her social media handle, Rupa Huq said she contacted Mr Kwarteng and apologised to him in person for her comments.

Kwasi Kwarteng was born Akwasi Addo Alfred Kwarteng in Waltham Forest, East London, in May 1975 to Ghanaian parents Alfred and Charlotte.
