“put kath first” – otumfuo’s powerful call to new hospital board

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a strong and heartfelt message to the newly formed board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

His advice was simple but firm: put the hospital’s needs above personal interests.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace during a courtesy call by the new board, Otumfuo reminded them of the vital role KATH plays in Ghana’s healthcare system, especially for the southern half of the country.

“If anything were to happen to me today, KATH is where I’d be taken,” he said. “That alone shows how important this hospital is. Let’s work together, avoid selfishness, and use the hospital’s funds wisely.”

The board is chaired by Otumfuo Hiahene, Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II. The hospital’s CEO, Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, led the team to the Palace to seek blessings and outline their vision.

Dr. Baidoo expressed deep commitment to the Heal Komfo Anokye project—a $10 million campaign aimed at renovating key parts of the aging facility.

“We understand your vision and want to take direct charge of the project to speed up progress,” Dr. Baidoo said.

He also requested Otumfuo’s help in reactivating donor-funded projects that have stalled, including the Children’s and Maternity Block, which is part of a wider UK-backed package involving the Kumasi Airport and Central Market.

Otumfuo acknowledged that these delays began after Ghana entered the IMF programme, which affected funding.

However, he shared some hope after recent discussions with the British Trade Envoy and a promise from former President Mahama that work would resume soon.

“KATH is still my top priority. I will not stop pushing until these stalled projects are completed,” Otumfuo assured.

The Asantehene ended by urging the board to serve with honesty, unity, and passion.

He expressed confidence in their ability to turn KATH into a world-class medical facility, capable of serving future generations.
