M N RidwanThe world is mourning the passing of Pope Francis, spiritual leader of more than a billion Catholics, who died on the morning of April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
The somber announcement came from the Vatican through a statement delivered by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who said:
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.
At 7:35 am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 when he became the first pope from Latin America and the first Jesuit pope.
His papacy marked a turning point for the Catholic Church, as he championed simplicity, humility, and compassion, often choosing to walk among the poor and marginalized.
Pope Francis quickly became known as “the people’s pope” for his down-to-earth nature, progressive outlook, and focus on social justice.
He steered the Church toward open dialogue on issues such as climate change, poverty, interfaith relations, and LGBTQ+ inclusion, though not without controversy.
Throughout his tenure, he remained a symbol of hope and reconciliation in a rapidly changing world.
From washing the feet of prisoners on Holy Thursday to speaking out on global inequality and refugee rights, Pope Francis consistently reminded the world of the Church’s core mission — to love and serve.
The news of his passing has sparked tributes from leaders around the globe. Within hours of the announcement, cathedrals around the world began tolling their bells in mourning.
Vigils are already being organized, and millions are expected to pay their respects at the Vatican in the coming days.
As the Church prepares to lay him to rest and begin the process of choosing a new pope, the world reflects on the powerful legacy Pope Francis leaves behind — one of compassion, courage, and commitment to humanity.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
