New Leaders for Ghana Immigration, Fire Service, and Prisons Appointed by Mahama

In a series of key leadership changes, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed new heads for the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and the Ghana Prisons Service.

The appointments, which were made public on Friday, March 13, 2025, are part of the President’s efforts to enhance the efficiency and leadership within these critical institutions.

The new appointments include DDGP Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been named the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service.

DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong has been appointed as the Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, and DCI Samuel Basentale Amadu will now serve as the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service.

These changes follow closely on the heels of the swearing-in of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

The reshuffling within the security agencies signals a fresh leadership approach, with each of the new appointees bringing their expertise to their respective roles.

The new appointments come at a time when tensions are high surrounding the removal of senior security heads.

Imani Ghana, in collaboration with security expert Professor Kwesi Aning, has filed a suit at the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the President from removing the heads of security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police, until the Court makes its ruling on the matter in May 2025.

The plaintiffs have argued that the removal of these leaders before the court decision could result in unfair treatment and violate constitutional principles.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, the president proceeded with his appointments, affirming his commitment to ensuring that the country’s security services are led by individuals capable of bringing positive change and upholding public safety.

The appointees come with years of experience in law enforcement and public service.

Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, the new Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, has a proven track record in prison management and rehabilitation.

Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, the first female to be appointed as Chief Fire Officer, brings expertise in fire safety and disaster management. Samuel Basentale Amadu, the new Comptroller-General of GIS, is well-versed in immigration law and border security.

As they take on their new roles, these leaders are expected to strengthen their respective services, enhance operational efficiency, and contribute to national security and public safety.
