Manhunt Launched for Suspect Using Fake Number Plates in Koforidua

Police in Koforidua have launched a manhunt for Attah Yaw Yankson, who is accused of using fake customized number plates on his vehicles, a move that violates the law.

Yankson, who allegedly claims to be the Adwamponghene (Chief) of the New Juaben Traditional Area, has been evading law enforcement after ignoring a police invitation.

The incident unfolded when a white Ford Raptor was seen at a public event near Jackson Park in Koforidua over the weekend.

The vehicle bore a customized number plate with the name “Adwamponghene.” Upon investigation, police discovered that the number plate was fake, and the vehicle was unregistered.

Officers from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) traced the vehicle and attempted to contact the driver for questioning.

However, a family member, identified as Charles Boateng, promised the police that the driver would report to the regional MTTD command at Galloway on Monday.

Unfortunately, the suspect disappeared with the vehicle early Monday morning and failed to honor the invitation.

It has been revealed that the vehicle was rented from an auto shop in Accra and the fake plates were affixed solely for show.

In a similar incident last year, Yankson was seen using another fake number plate, “Yiadom 3-24,” on a black Land Cruiser GX. The police have been tracking him since then, and he is now on their wanted list.

Charles Boateng, who was contacted by the police, expressed his disappointment in Yankson’s actions and pledged to assist law enforcement in locating him.

Boateng has promised to produce Yankson and the vehicle by Thursday, February 6, 2025. If he fails to do so, the police will be forced to take action against him as well.

Authorities have warned the public against using fake number plates and advised that vehicle owners must go through the Driver Vehicle License Authority (DVLA) to obtain official customized plates and registration.

The police have pledged to take strict action against individuals who engage in such illegal activities, emphasizing that they will continue to hunt down those who attempt to bypass the law.
