M N RidwanPresident-elect John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep concern over the growing disillusionment among Ghanaian youth regarding democracy.
Speaking at the Assemblies of God Church in Tamale, Mahama acknowledged that many young people in the country are losing trust in democratic governance, primarily due to a lack of opportunities and the belief that democracy has not served their interests.
According to Mahama, the youth feel disheartened because they are not benefiting from the promises of democracy, leading some to question whether it remains the best system of governance.
“We need to be selfless so that we can gain back the trust of our young people that democracy indeed works,” he said, highlighting the importance of collective effort to restore faith in the system.
The former president pointed out that Ghana’s Fourth Republic, established in 1993, has endured for over three decades, making it the longest-lasting republic in the country’s history.
Despite this success, Mahama noted that many young Ghanaians still feel that the country is not working in their favor, particularly when it comes to opening up opportunities for personal and professional growth.
As the country prepares to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the Fourth Republic on January 7, Mahama emphasized the significance of unity and selflessness.
He reminded the nation that the celebration, while marking a historic milestone, should serve as a moment for all Ghanaians to come together in a shared commitment to improving the nation for future generations.
Mahama concluded by expressing his hope that Ghana would continue to grow stronger, with opportunities created for all, especially the youth, who he sees as vital to the country’s future.
