M N RidwanPresident John Dramani Mahama has announced that teacher and nursing trainees’ allowances will now be paid through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD).
This new method of payment, he explained, will ensure that the allowances are distributed regularly and on time, eliminating the delays that have been a common issue in the past.
Speaking during his “Thank You Tour” of the Northern Region, President Mahama assured that the shift to CAGD would streamline the payment process, much like the timely disbursement of government workers’ salaries.
The announcement was made at a durbar held at the Jubilee Park in Tamale, where the President addressed a large crowd of supporters.
In his speech, Mahama emphasized that the government’s decision to change the payment structure was in direct response to the frustrations experienced by trainee teachers and nurses, who have often faced delays in receiving their allowances.
By routing payments through CAGD, the government hopes to ensure that students in these critical fields are supported without unnecessary delays, allowing them to focus more on their studies.
Earlier in the day, Mahama paid a courtesy visit to Ya-Na Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, at the Gbewaa Palace.
This was part of his ongoing “Thank You Tour” across the region following his victory in the December presidential elections.
The President also reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all Ghanaians, highlighting several initiatives from the 2025 Budget Statement.
Among these was the allocation of resources to provide free sanitary pads to girls in schools, ensuring that they can stay in class even during their menstrual periods.
Furthermore, Mahama promised the completion of the Eastern Corridor Road, which he said would significantly improve transportation within the country.
He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people of the Northern Region for their overwhelming support for the National Democratic Congress during the elections.
At the event, the Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Ali Adolf John, appealed to the President to consider establishing a military barracks in Yendi to address recurring conflicts along the Eastern Corridor.
