M N RidwanThe legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has responded to the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) request for him to appear before investigators, explaining that he is currently abroad receiving medical care.
In a letter dated January 31, the lawyers informed the OSP that their client was unable to report for questioning on January 24, 2025, as originally requested, due to his medical trip.
According to the letter, Ofori-Atta was unaware of the OSP’s letter, as it was left at his security post while he was outside the country.
His legal team clarified that Ofori-Atta had informed both the former and current Chief of Staff of his medical travel earlier in January.
The lawyers further detailed that Ofori-Atta was undergoing medical observation and tests, with his treatment plans yet to be finalized.
Due to this, they have requested the OSP to reschedule his in-person appearance until he returns to Ghana.
They assured the OSP of their willingness to cooperate and provide any necessary information to support the ongoing investigation.
This development comes on the heels of a press conference held by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng on February 12, 2025, where Ofori-Atta was declared a fugitive.
The OSP has launched an investigation into allegations of financial mismanagement, corruption, and related offenses, stemming from several controversial deals during Ofori-Atta’s tenure as Finance Minister.
These include dealings with Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority, the National Cathedral project, and the procurement of ambulances by the Ministry of Health.
Following the OSP’s declaration of Ofori-Atta as a fugitive, media reports circulated claiming that security personnel had raided Ofori-Atta’s home in Accra.
However, Special Prosecutor Agyebeng denied any involvement by the OSP in the alleged raid during his press briefing, further fueling questions surrounding the investigation.
As the legal process continues, Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana remains uncertain, with his lawyers seeking to resolve the matter once his medical treatment is concluded.
