Ghana’s newly elected President, John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to lead the nation out of what he called an “abyss,” created by the outgoing Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.
In a heartfelt acceptance speech on December 9, 2024, Mahama acknowledged the tough road ahead and urged Ghanaians to prepare for a challenging journey of national recovery.
The former president, who secured a decisive victory in the 2024 general elections, outlined the daunting task his government would face, particularly in restoring the economy.
He described the impact of the last eight years under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia as leaving deep scars on the nation’s psyche.
Mahama emphasized that rebuilding the public’s trust in the economy and governance would require a collective effort from all Ghanaians.
“We must all come together to pull our country out of the abyss,” Mahama stated.
“The journey will be difficult, but it is necessary for the future of our nation.”
While acknowledging the immense expectations placed on his administration, Mahama reassured Ghanaians that his team was ready to take on the monumental task.
He expressed confidence that his government would implement bold reforms aimed at restoring faith in both Ghana’s democracy and economy.
The president-elect also highlighted the significance of the 2024 election result, noting that the overwhelming support from Ghanaians was a clear call for change.
He vowed that his next term would bring about crucial reforms to ensure that the political class works for the people, restoring the bond of trust between citizens and their government.
Mahama ended his speech on a note of optimism: “We are moving towards a Ghana of hope and opportunity. Our best days are ahead of us. Forward ever, backward never!”
With his win now sealed, Mahama’s leadership will be put to the test as the country begins a new chapter of recovery and progress.
