A 30-year-old woman, identified as Mavis Nkrumah, has been arrested for allegedly pouring a substance suspected to be acid on her ex-boyfriend, Gideon Frimpong, during a disturbing confrontation in Ablekuma Fan Milk, a suburb of Accra.

The incident reportedly happened in the early hours of May 28, 2025, and was confirmed by the Tesano Divisional Police Command. According to police reports, Mavis had gone to visit Gideon, a 29-year-old taxi driver, to confirm whether their romantic relationship was truly over.

In a statement released by Superintendent Julianna Obeng, Head of Public Affairs at the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, the encounter began around 1:00 a.m., when Mavis appeared unannounced at her ex-partner’s home.

After a brief exchange, Gideon agreed to drive her home. However, while on the road, he reportedly asked her to alight due to the bumpy nature of the route ahead.

It was at this point that the situation turned violent.

“Mavis questioned him about their relationship,” Superintendent Obeng said. “After the third confirmation that the relationship had indeed ended, she stepped out of the vehicle and poured the suspected acid through the driver’s side onto Gideon.”

Frimpong sustained severe burns to his back, neck, and other parts of his body. Fortunately, bystanders quickly identified him and rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. He has since been discharged and is said to be recovering.

Following the attack, Mavis fled the scene and attempted to cross the border into a neighbouring country, possibly in an effort to evade arrest. However, after several days of investigation and tracking, she was apprehended on June 3, 2025, and is now in police custody.

The incident has sparked public outrage and reignited conversations around intimate partner violence and the importance of emotional conflict resolution.

Police authorities have urged the public not to resort to violence to resolve personal issues.

“Acts of violence are criminal and will be dealt with by the law,” Superintendent Obeng warned.

“The Command remains committed to ensuring public safety and urges everyone to report any suspicious or harmful behaviour to the nearest police station.”

Mavis Nkrumah is expected to be formally charged in the coming days as investigations continue.
