Ghana Health Service Issues Warning on Surge of hMPV Respiratory Infections

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued an alert in response to a surge in acute respiratory infections, particularly those caused by the Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), which is currently spreading across China and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

In an official press release, the GHS clarified that the outbreak is not linked to a new virus, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead, the rise in cases is consistent with the usual seasonal increase of hMPV-related respiratory illnesses during the winter months.

However, the GHS emphasized the importance of vigilance and preventive measures to help reduce potential risks to public health.

Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, explained that the Public Health Emergency Operation Centre recently convened to review the latest updates.

According to information provided by the National Influenza Centre (NIC), weekly respiratory samples collected from all 16 regions of Ghana have not detected any unusual respiratory pathogens, including hMPV, at this time.

To ensure adequate preparation, the GHS has taken proactive steps in collaboration with international health partners, following guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO).

These measures include enhanced surveillance of respiratory infections, expanded laboratory testing, continuous monitoring of developments in the Northern Hemisphere, and an increase in public education campaigns aimed at raising awareness about preventive measures.

The GHS has urged the public to practice preventive strategies, including maintaining proper respiratory hygiene, washing hands regularly, avoiding touching the face, wearing face masks when necessary, seeking prompt medical attention for respiratory symptoms, and maintaining a healthy diet.

These measures are essential in helping to minimize the spread of respiratory infections and protect the health of the public.

Reassuring the nation, the GHS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the health of Ghanaians, stating that it will provide regular updates on the situation.
