A 23-year-old fisherman, Joseph Armah, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to defiling a four-year-old girl in Chorkor, Accra.
The sentence was handed down by the Gender-Based Violence Court at the Police Headquarters, following his admission of the crime.
The court, presided over by Judge Dora Eshun, convicted Armah after the prosecution presented disturbing details of the assault.
According to the prosecution, Armah, also known as Asaa, took advantage of the young victim on November 29, 2024, when she was playing near his home.
He lured the child with a GH¢1 coin, promising her that she could use it to buy a biscuit. After the girl bought and ate the biscuit, Armah led her into his room by the seashore.
Once inside, Armah sexually assaulted the victim, a crime that shocked the community. Afterward, he left for Apam, while the victim returned home.
Her mother soon noticed that her daughter was walking strangely and confronted her. The young girl bravely told her mother about the abuse.
The victim’s mother immediately informed the complainant, the girl’s uncle, about what had happened.
A report was made to the Mamprobi police station, where a medical form was issued to ensure the child received medical care.
Following a police investigation, Armah was arrested and taken into custody, where he eventually confessed to the crime.
The sentencing has sparked outrage and calls for stronger measures to protect vulnerable children from sexual abuse.
The court’s decision to imprison Armah for eight years sends a strong message about the seriousness of sexual offenses, particularly those involving children.
