M N RidwanJean Mensa, the Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), has appealed to Ghanaians to exercise patience as they await the official results of the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference on December 8, Mensa reassured the public that the EC was committed to transparency and accuracy, ensuring that the people’s choice for president will be accurately reflected in the final results.
“We assure all the people of Ghana that it is the will of the people, as expressed at the polls, that will be reflected in the results we declare,” Mensa said, emphasizing that the final decision on the presidency would be announced soon.
Mensa explained that it had only been 23 hours since the polls closed and that the EC was still within its constitutional mandate of 72 hours to declare the results.
She acknowledged that while the EC had aimed to beat its previous record of declaring results within 48 hours (set in 2020), the 72-hour window allowed for thorough verification.
“We broke our record in 2020 by declaring results within 48 hours, and we are confident that within 72 hours, we will have the final presidential results,” Mensa assured the public.
Her comments came shortly after Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, made a gracious concession call to former President John Mahama, congratulating him on his victory.
Bawumia’s public call for peace and unity following the election results was widely praised for demonstrating the maturity of Ghana’s democracy.
Ghanaians are now awaiting the official confirmation of the election results, with many hopeful for the continued peaceful and democratic process in the country.
