M N RidwanThe Electoral Commission (EC) has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Greater Accra Regional Organiser of orchestrating an attack on its offices during the ongoing collation of results for the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The incident, which took place on January 17, 2025, left staff members traumatized and caused significant property damage, according to the EC.
The disruption occurred while the EC was in the process of collating polling station results for the constituency, which had experienced delays due to incomplete results from three polling stations.
This delay had forced the EC to schedule the continuation of the collation process for the morning of January 17, 2025.
However, due to concerns over security, the Ghana Police Service recommended a postponement of the exercise to ensure the safety of all involved.
Despite these warnings, the EC alleged that security reinforcement was absent at the collation centre, leaving the commission vulnerable to the attack.
The assailants, reportedly led by the NDC’s regional organiser, were accused of vandalising property at the EC’s Old Head Office, breaking furniture and louvre blades.
The attack also caused distress among staff members at the New Corporate Head Office, who reported receiving threats from the invaders.
Adding to the tension, two unidentified individuals dressed in military attire were reportedly seen among the attackers.
The EC has expressed its disappointment over the lack of security support from the police, as the absence of proper protection allowed the incident to escalate, further delaying the collation process for Ablekuma North.
This event follows a High Court ruling on January 4, 2025, ordering the EC to resume the collation and declaration of results for four unresolved parliamentary elections, with Ablekuma North among the constituencies yet to conclude their election processes.
