M N RidwanIn a historic win for Djibouti, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has been elected as the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
The highly anticipated election took place during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 17, 2025.
Youssouf’s victory marks a significant milestone in his long diplomatic career, as he now assumes a four-year term in one of the most influential positions on the continent.
Youssouf triumphed over two formidable candidates: former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former Malagasy Foreign Minister Richard Randriamandrato.
His victory brings the Foreign Minister of Djibouti to the helm of the AU Commission, replacing Chad’s Moussa Faki, whose tenure ended following the election.
Having served as Djibouti’s Foreign Minister since 2005, Youssouf is the longest-serving foreign minister in Africa, which has granted him extensive experience in diplomacy and international relations.
His election to the top AU role is seen as a reflection of his leadership capabilities and his deep understanding of the continent’s challenges and aspirations.
Also elected during the summit was Madam Selma Haddadi from Algeria, who will serve as the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. Both Youssouf and Haddadi’s victories are seen as a testament to the growing leadership presence of African women in continental governance.
Kenyan President William Ruto, whose country had backed Raila Odinga’s candidacy, extended his congratulations to both Youssouf and Haddadi in a message on social media platform X.
While Ruto expressed disappointment over the outcome, he emphasized Kenya’s unwavering support for the new leadership of the African Union.
“Kenya pledges her full support to you as you steer the Africa Union Commission to the next level,” he said.
As the newly appointed Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Youssouf is expected to lead the organization through a crucial phase of Africa’s development.
His leadership is anticipated to focus on advancing the AU’s goals, including economic growth, peace and security, and regional integration.
