Prudential Life Insurance Ghana Launches US$100,000 Climate Action Project in Chorkor

Prudential Life Insurance Ghana has launched a US$100,000 Climate Action project aimed at tackling environmental challenges in Chorkor, a coastal community in Accra.

The initiative, named the PRU Climate Action Initiative, is designed to address pressing health, environmental, and climate-related issues such as coastal erosion, flooding, pollution, and poor drainage systems that have plagued the area.

Funded under the Climate & Health Resilience Fund (CHRF) by the Prudence Foundation, the charitable arm of Prudential plc in Asia and Africa, the project is a response to the growing impact of climate change on communities.

The foundation focuses on helping markets adapt to the health challenges posed by climate change, and this project in Chorkor is part of that broader effort.

The PRU Climate Action Initiative will be implemented by United Way Ghana, and it aims to benefit approximately 24,000 residents, or about 80% of Chorkor’s population. Key interventions include environmental education, tree planting initiatives led by school clubs, and waste management programs to foster long-term climate resilience in the community.

During the launch at the Chemuena South 4 Cluster of Schools, Jane Dornukuor Mingle, CEO of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, highlighted the project’s importance, saying it aligns with the company’s mission:

“For Every Life, For Every Future.” She further explained that the project was not only a strategic move for the company’s sustainability efforts but also a critical initiative to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient future for both current and future generations.

Among the specific interventions, the Chemuena Cluster of Schools will benefit from the construction of a 20-seater toilet and water facilities, ensuring better sanitation for over 400 students.

Additionally, 100 bio-digester toilets will be installed throughout the community to improve sanitation, and 300 underprivileged residents will be enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The project will also feature a year-long advocacy campaign in Chorkor’s public schools, including Saint Moses Basic School, St. George’s Basic School, Mamprobi South 4 Basic School, Chemunaa Basic School, and Chorkor Presbyterian Basic School, to educate students and community members on waste management and sanitation.

These efforts are expected to reduce health risks, such as waterborne diseases and open defecation, and improve overall public health in the area.

In addition, Prudential Life donated sanitation logistics to the community, including shovels, dustbins, standing brooms, cutlasses, wheelbarrows, and a tricycle, all aimed at enhancing waste management efforts and supporting community cleaning exercises.

The launch event saw attendance from local leaders, including the Chiefs and Queen of Chorkor, Naa Adorkor Gyamfi I, and several other key officials from the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, and National Health Insurance Authority.

They expressed gratitude for the project and pledged to collaborate with school authorities and community leaders to ensure the sustainability of the improvements.
