CHINESE-BACKED FAKE ACCOUNTS SPREADING MISLEADIND INFORMATION ON COVID19 REMOVED BY FACEBOOK

The false account, with links to Chinese-backed organisations, began and opened out untrue claims that the US forced the scientists to lay blame on China for COVID-19.

Numerous accounts relating to a campaign by China to spread untrue claims about the pandemic were removed by Facebook.

The false profiles originating from China claims the US pressurized scientists to blame China for the spread of COVID-19.

Investigations carried out found the claims were set up by workers of Chinese-state run organization, becoming the subject of domestic news headlines soon.

Ben Nimmo, who leads into disinformation at Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram said, “In effect it worked like an outline hall of mirrors, endlessly reflecting the original fake person and it’s anti-US disinformation”.

The social media company said one of these false accounts belonged to a fake Swiss biologist called Wilson Edward.

When the operation began in July, Mr. Wilson’s account was claiming US officials were using “enormous pressure and intimidation” to get scientist back to calls for prolonged examinations into the start of COVID -19.

Within hours, hundreds of accounts started liking, reposting or linking the post and even some created the accounts only that day.

Numerous of those profiles were later found to be fake, with some of the users using likely fabricated profiles and others posing as Westerners.

Facebook said these links were found between accounts and a tech firm based in a city in China named Chengdu, also overseas workers of Chinese framework companies.

After a week of the commencing the post, large media outlets based in China were reporting on the claims like the posts were made by real scientists.

An investigation revealed that there is no record of any biologist with that name. After all Meta removed more than 600 accounts that were linked to the network on Facebook and Instagram.
