M N RidwanThe Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) is calling for the creation of a special unit within the Ghana Police Service to help strengthen discipline and security in senior high schools across the country.
The proposal, which was presented to the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a recent meeting in Sunyani, aims to tackle growing concerns about student indiscipline and security lapses on high school campuses.
According to CHASS, discipline in many senior high schools is on the decline, and current security arrangements are not adequate. Most schools rely on civilian security guards, many of whom lack the proper training to manage students or respond to serious incidents.
CHASS believes that the presence of trained, uniformed police personnel—especially stationed at campus entry and exit points—would deter misconduct, prevent unauthorized movement of students, and boost overall safety.
“We think it’s time to rethink school security,” a CHASS representative stated. “Having a dedicated unit of trained officers focused on maintaining discipline and safety will send a strong message and support the work of school administrators.”
The idea has sparked conversation among educators, parents, and security experts, with some expressing concern over the possible militarization of school environments.
However, CHASS insists the goal is not to intimidate students, but rather to provide structured support for maintaining order and ensuring safety on school grounds.
The association is hopeful that the Ministry of Education will seriously consider the proposal and collaborate with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ghana Police Service to make it a reality.
If implemented, the special police unit could mark a major shift in how student behavior and school security are managed in Ghana, especially amid rising reports of violence, truancy, and unauthorized student movement.
The Education Ministry is yet to issue an official response, but the conversation around this proposal is already gaining national attention.
