M N RidwanThe Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a strong disclaimer after reports emerged suggesting that its currency transport boxes are being misused by individuals for activities unrelated to their intended purpose.
These containers, initially used for the safe transport of currency, have been repurposed for domestic and commercial use, including some potentially unlawful activities.
In a statement titled “Use and Misuse of Bank of Ghana Currency Transport Boxes,” the central bank clarified that while these durable wooden boxes are often reused after their official function, any suggestion that the Bank of Ghana is linked to criminal activities involving these boxes is completely false and damaging to its reputation.
The BoG explained that the boxes, originally designed for currency import operations, are robust and can withstand wear and tear.
Commercial banks typically return the empty boxes, or they may find alternative uses for them. However, because of their sturdiness, some members of the public have found ways to repurpose them for storage, transport, and other non-official activities.
Despite this, the Bank of Ghana made it clear that it cannot be associated with any misuse of these boxes for criminal purposes.
The BoG stated that recent reports indicating that individuals may be using these boxes to implicate the Bank or tarnish its public image are of serious concern.
“Misuse of such boxes for criminal activities must be thoroughly investigated, and all persons found culpable should face prosecution,” the BoG emphasized.
The central bank also stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of its operations and ensuring that law enforcement agencies take swift and decisive action against any criminal activities linked to the improper use of these containers.
In an era where images and associations can quickly fuel misconceptions, the Bank of Ghana underscored that just because a reused currency box is involved in criminal activity, it does not mean that it carries the Bank’s endorsement or authority.
The BoG further reassured the public that it is committed to maintaining the trust and confidence of the Ghanaian people in its operations.
