Bawumia Urges Mahama to Call His Supporters to Order Amid Post-Election Violence

Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to intervene and restore order, following a wave of post-election violence in parts of the country.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), under Mahama’s leadership, won the 2024 elections, but the aftermath has been marred by violent incidents.

In a statement shared via social media, Bawumia expressed concern over the actions of NDC supporters, who have been implicated in violent raids across the country.

Offices belonging to New Patriotic Party (NPP) ministers and members of parliament have been vandalized, and critical items have been stolen.

The violence has extended to private homes, with individuals reportedly receiving death threats.

Bawumia condemned the unrest, emphasizing that the elections had been widely praised as free and fair.

“It is regrettable that these reprehensible acts are being perpetrated following an electoral process that has been widely touted as credible,” he said.

The Vice President called on Mahama to show statesmanship and urge his supporters to cease the violence in order to preserve the peace and unity of the country.

Bawumia reminded Mahama that, although he had won the election, his responsibility now was to ensure the protection of life and property, not to condone lawlessness.

He further warned that continued violence could provoke retaliation, undermining the progress made in Ghana’s democracy.

The Vice President’s statement came in response to reports of NDC supporters using force to declare parliamentary candidates as winners, as well as their involvement in attacks on state institutions and public offices.

Bawumia urged Mahama to act swiftly to ensure the nation’s peaceful transition and avoid tarnishing the credibility of the elections.

Dr. Bawumia concluded by calling on Mahama and the NDC to prove they are committed democrats, stressing that national interests must always come before personal or political ambitions.
